European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
